It’s unsurprising really, given the amount of highly talented, motivated and original-minded creative types that dwell on the island. You just have to take a walk through some of the more celebrated bars, clubs and villas in Bali to realize that there is an architectural force at work behind the scenes. I’ve often wondered who exactly is responsible for the designs of Ku De Ta, Paparazzi, Bacio and the ubiquitous 66 club – not to mention the plethora of luxurious and groundbreaking designer villas dotted around the Seminyak area.

It didn’t take long to track down the man responsible and to find out his take on where villa life in Bali is headed in the coming years and just how he ended up in Bali designing bars, clubs and luxurious private residencies.

Fredo Taffin is an enigmatic character, a sailor at heart who first ventured to this part of the world back in the late eighties after graduating from design school and ditching the grind of life in his native Paris for ten years on the ocean, first building ships then sailing around the world. He arrived in Bali, built a new catamaran in Tanjung Benoa and undertook a mapping project of the archipelago on behalf of an admiral of the Indonesian Navy before returning to co-found the Waka Group as a tourist operator.

By 1997 design had still not factored in Fredo’s life, but with a two-year visit to Melbourne and completion of a Computer Aided Design course he started consulting on various projects in Bali, including the Ku De Ta design and construction in 2000.“A lot of people were unhappy about the Ku De Ta look,” Fredo says. “There was a lot of resistance from the expatriates at the time towards a new design style, the final result was a shock to some people, it was too contemporary, too sharp.” It was simply before its time. The operators did fantastic work to make it happen and now everyone raves about this place.

Paparazzi, 66, Liquid Bar (now closed), Mbargo and the new kid on the Blue Ocean block – Bacio – were next in line for a Fredo overhaul, as was the opening of Paparazzi in Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta. “I love being handed the keys to a venue and knowing that I am in charge of making things happen, the visualization, management and delivery of a project – that’s my buzz.” Things didn’t stop at just bars and clubs, Fredo also worked on specific, one-off villa design projects for close friends including DownTown(the first hip boutique residences in Bali), the landmark Istana villa on the Bukit in 2002 (the first of its kind on Bali’s barren peninsula – another gamble that no-one thought would work) and the much-lauded Tukad Segara residence in Batu Belig 2005 – a self-contained seven-bedroom retreat with bespoke games room, gym and spa and library replete with polished Travertine Italian marble and designed to be completely maintenance free, with only a handful of staff on the premises.
The most recent project in Padang, just over the bridge and atop the cliffs of the famed Padang Padang surfing break, has just been completed.
He is currently working on two hotel projects in Thailand, although Fredo is quick to point out that he is a Seminyak boy at heart and does most of his work in the area.

I ask him which direction he sees villa lifestyle taking in the next ten years and the response is unsurprising,
“The Jakarta investors have been watching Bali for some time and they’re coming. We’re going to see a boom in mid-high range priced apartments for this market, people that will want a second home that will also generate income as an investment.”

With this rapid urbanization Fredo is quick to point out that developers need to become more ecologically responsible – the landscape of Bali simply cannot absorb this current excessive development trend. With the implementation of bio-septic systems to process raw sewage before it is released into the drains, rivers and ocean and investment in building materials that will not require constant maintenance using aggressive chemicals, the environment may remain semi-protected for a while longer.

There is a trend towards environmentally sound development taking place in the tourism sector now, although it is at a very early stage.
The tourism industry wants to give accreditation for environmentally conscious projects and award developers who respect the environment, an initiative that Fredo not only applauds but also is promoting with his focus on intelligent, maintenance-free and durable villa design in Bali.
bali architect fredo taffin contactarchitect bali impression kudeta bali portfolio bali architect release bali architect visual architect bali visual2 bali visual3 bali kudeta visual4
